Yaz and Yasmin both contain a synthetic female sex hormone known as drospirenone. Risk of Yaz blood clots prompts FDA warnings
The FDA has already issued two warnings – one on May 31, 2011 and the most recent on September 26, 2011 – about the risk of Yaz blood clots and related events such as Yaz pulmonary embolism. The FDA is still weighing “conflicting” data from a number of studies about birth control pills, and while the health agency has not come to a final conclusion about the safety of Yaz, or the exact risk of Yaz pulmonary embolism, it “remains concerned” about Yaz and Yasmin side effects.
A recent Danish study corroborates earlier findings about the risk of blood clots and Yaz pulmonary embolism, finding that incidents of Yaz blood clots, while relatively few, are still twice as common as with other birth control pills. The study followed 1.3 million Danish women over a period of nine years to track their Yaz and Yasmin side effects, including Yaz pulmonary embolism.
In order to come to a more definitive conclusion about the risk of Yaz blood clots and Yaz pulmonary embolism, the FDA has scheduled a joint meeting with the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee on December 8, 2011.
